Canada’s review before the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD)

Posted on February 17, 2012

A coalition of First Nations organizations and governments, including the Assembly of First Nations and the Native Women’s Association of Canada, as well as NGOs including Amnesty International and KAIROS, has written to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) urging the Commitee to examine against Indigenous peoples. Click here to read today’s joint media advisory.

More than 35 Indigenous nations, regional and national Indigenous people’s organizations, human rights and social justice organizations have filed their own individual alternative reports to CERD. Click here to read NWAC’s Shadow Report.

More information about CERD and Canada’s review is posted on the Committee’s website.

I discovered information on your site that revealed information about a CERD meeting in Geneva scheduled for Feb 22, 23. To be very precice, I consider the accusation that aprox 600 cases throughout 30 yrs. related to missing or murdered women in Canada is an extremely serious accusation. As you can see. This is an average of 20 cases a year. Allegedly these cases occur slightly less than twice a month. I look forward to discovering the precise findings that result from that meeting. Criminal negligence ? My definition of extremely serious. Canada has a right to council without delay. Canada has a right to be advised of the specific charges against it. Thank-you for the update.
